Digital media platforms are inundated with content; with a release frequency of nearly 95 million pieces of content a day (Beyond, 2024), standing out in your industry is more difficult than ever.

On a cognitive level, the human brain processes 34GB of information daily, meaning that your content is competing for attention and retention with a physiological limit, not just with other brands (Bohn, R. E., & Short, J. E., 2012). From this, we see that attention is a biological bottleneck, not a marketing one, and that conversions happen when content aligns with how the brain encodes relevance, trust, and risk.

Content conversions follow the same cognitive pattern that drives all decision making: stimulus, salience, emotion, interpretation, and action. The stimulus is the hook that initially captures the brain's attention, in the ventral attention network (Corbetta, M., & Shulman, G. L., 2002). If attention has been captured, the brain will move into salience, activating the dorsal attention network (Corbetta, M., & Shulman, G. L., 2002). This is where the brain will ask, "does this matter to me?", and filter the input based on relevance. If the brain deems the content relevant, emotion, led by the amygdala and ventromedial prefrontal cortex, kicks in (Phelps, E. A., & LeDoux, J. E., 2005). Crivelli (2024) details how subconscious and emotion-led processes dominate decision bias, making it the most important part of the funnel. From there, the brain moves into the interpretation phase, where the prefrontal cortex seeks clarity and framing to reduce cognitive stress (Shenhav, A., Botvinick, M. M., & Cohen, J. D., 2013). The final part of the neurocognitive pattern that drives decision making is action. The action phase, led by the striatal dopamine pathways, only occurs when the perceived reward outweighs the perceived risk (Berridge, K. C., 2012). The reward pathway is driven by dopamine, the neurotransmitter that the brain consistently seeks out that provides the predicted reward feeling. The amygdala assesses the perceived risk, and if the perceived dopaminergic surge outweighs the perceived risk, the content will convert.

We can define the following marketing terms by the same five-step cognitive pattern. An impression is a stimulus, engagement is salience, clicks are emotion, leads are interpretation, and revenue is action. By looking at the biological basis of conversions, we can identify the conversion mechanisms behind content and use them to market with greater intelligence and impact.
